This is done using ethtoolwhich tells the interface to respond to the magic packet. Sending WOL messages I installed the etherwake package in the controlling system for the etherwake command to send the "Magic Packet" to my computer to wake it up.

The program must be run as root to send the packet I use sudo to execute it. It is also slightly more configurable.

I only wanted my machine to turn on when I specifically told it to, not on unicast messages ubroadcast messages b or multicast messages m. At the time of writing, scripts in this package will set the wake option for all relevant interface cards to "Magic Packet" onlyg.

This will be a problem if you want your machine to wake "on-demand", when it receives traffic ufor example. The issue and a fix is discussed below.

Kernel 2. If that's the case I'd make an local. While I was messing with these settings, I noticed that both too and cp were loading, but loading just cp alone failed since my chipset isn't new enough so I blacklisted it. Debugging state with ethtool After an hour struggling with why my system still didn't work I started throwing in the ethtool query command all over the place to see what the deal was: ethtool eth0 ifup I found that at least with my too driver on Debian 3.

PM-Utils Conflicts The pm-utils package contains scripts that are run on suspend, hibernate and on resume of the system. You can detect the problem, once you know what you're looking for, by noticing through ethtool after a resume that the "Wake-on" settings for interfaces have been set to "g".

That default file uses ethtool to configure WOL for all interfaces to "g" magic packet alone. This latter file is included in the the "pm-utils" Debian package, and may be updated from time to time through the package-management system.

Each interface can have a different configuration, and it is typical to configure WOL to "ug" to wake the system on a unicast packet for traffic sent specifically to that interface. This allows the system to be woken on demand, when traffic to one of its interfaces is received. I can log into my gateway and boot my desktop, grab what I need and then power it back off remotely.

If I didn't have that I could keep a text file. To have an application or service is running on startup, Ubuntu uses Upstart scripts which replace the old init scripts. The following commands; create wakeonlan. Wake-on-LAN is platform-independent; any application that sends "magic packets" can wake up computers from shutdown state as long mains power is not off regardless of the OS it boots into afterwards.

The simplest usage of powerwake is to just supply the IP address or hostname of the machine you want to wake:. If everything goes well, as described above, you should now be seeing the machine in the other room booting up.

You can make it even easier to run the above application from the command line or other scripts. One way is to include aliases to it in your. Open the file in your preferred text editor and scroll to the bottom of the file, then add one or more of the lines below, depending on what you need to do. You will now have two new commands aliases available for use from the command line; the first alias htpcwol simple wakes the host up remotely and the second one htpcssh also wakes it up but then creates an SSH session to the remote machine.

Aliases are a huge time saver if you use the command line for remote access often and there are many examples on the internet. To suspend the remote machine from within an SSH session set the suspend command to run several minutes in the future: [3].

You can then disconnect safely from the SSH session and the remote machine will suspend at the set time. Commands to shutdown systems often work best when issuing them against MAC addresses. However, if I turn it off using Ubuntu the computer won't turn back on if I use wol. Following this answer I tried the following but it did not work:. I just ran into this problem after upgrading two properly configured machines to I remember that Ubuntu moved to netplan and found an answer from paulgj in the forums that made it work again for me.

You may try this if the existing answers don't work. I hope this configuration did not disable anything that's going to haunt me in the upcoming weeks. Edit: for desktops you should replace renderer: networkd with renderer: NetworkManager and then run sudo netplan apply. Since it works in Windows than you know the problem lies within the Linux OS so the solution is Either way you are going to need to know the name of the network interface.

Run the following:. The interface with an IPv4 address that isn't the loopback is the one that we are looking for. The output looks like:. If you used the Ubuntu Desktop ISO to install your system than you are using NetworkManager to control your network interfaces and you will need to do the following:.

Systemd is how Ubuntu has decided to go so we might as well get used to it and use it to turn on WOL every time the system boots. If you were a bit more adventurous and installed Ubuntu Server than your interfaces are controlled via systemd-networkd and Ubuntu has added the Netplan. This is a YAML file and they are very picky about spacing so make sure the text you add is directly in line with the other text in the section.

Now we need to generate, test and apply the new config the generation step isn't completely necessary but I've included it here for completeness :. And assuming the test succeeds, if it doesn't the configuration will revert and you most likely got the formatting wrong, now run:.

And after restart the network service it worked as a charm, but only with Magic Packets, that is cool; to provide tha Magic Packets I'm using a python script, adapted from here ; I said adapted because this script is for Python 2, and my setup is Python 3. I'm posting this because while googling Ubuntu 16 wol and other similar searches I came across with this post several times. This could help somebody else. To keep WOL working, I had to re-enable it every time the system booted. To avoid doing this manually I used systemd for this purpose.

This is what I did:. Put this in it:. Enable this for the interface on boot, run the following command change eth3 with your interface :. To check if it's enabled, run the following command change eth3 with your interface and it should return enabled :. Then modify it properly:. From now you can turn it off and turn it on from another machine on the same LAN by wakeonlan 1a:2b:3c:4d:5e:6f command, where 1a:2b:3c:4d:5e:6f is MAC address of the LAN card from previous step.

This just bit me too under Ubuntu I had tried this approach too at first and it seemed to work, I am scheduling a system to boot each evening via WakeOnLan to run backups as the system BIOS does not provide a scheduled AC on option.
